You may not have diabetes. But here’s something everyone eating foods from the standard western diet should know.

Millions of people are now considered “pre-diabetic” — just about to succumb to type 2 diabetes, or even suffering from pancreatic inflammation (pancreatitis) which can lead to diabetes.

So here’s a short list of foods you can eat to protect your pancreas and avoid pancreatitis and diabetes.

Olive oil and fish.

Your pancreas is a hardworking organ. It’s not just the beta cells that make insulin to process blood sugar. It also supplies hormones you need to promote proper digestion. Pancreatitis, inflammation of the pancreas, can be an acute or chronic condition that may threaten your health and your life.

You can even get it from taking some type 2 diabetes medications like Januvia and Byetta.

To reverse the risk and the damage, the Mediterranean diet is the one that gives you the most virgin olive oil and fresh fish, which lower inflammation that can injure pancreatic cells and lead to diabetes or worse.

A study conducted by a research group at the University of Granada has found that oleic acid and hydroxytyrosol and omega-3 fats affect the cellular mechanisms involved in the development of acute pancreatitis.

The author of the study, María Belén López Millán, says: “…there is increasing evidence that there are oxidative-inflammatory processes involved in the origin of chronic diseases and that diet plays an important role in such processes. The antioxidant (phenolic compounds) and anti-inflammatory (omega-3 fatty acids) effects of diet components (nutrients and bioactive compounds) prevent… the pathological incidence of oxidative-inflammatory processes.”

Some of the foods besides wild caught fish, eggs, pasture raised meat and sea vegetables that have a ton of omega-3s are seeds. Flax seeds, chia seeds and radish seeds are the three with the most omega-3. Butternuts and walnuts are also rich in omega-3s.

You get tyrosol and hydroxytyrosol from virgin olive oil, white wine and even champagne.
