Caffeine is a proven performance enhancer. It gives you a rush of energy that’s pleasant, and it works. What could be better?

Well, maybe this…

Caffeine might also be a bedroom performance enhancer, for both men and women.

In a recent study they took two groups of people and divided them into a caffeine and a placebo group. The caffeine group received 100 mg caffeine for 3 weeks, and each person was told to take it 2 hours prior to having intimate relations.

Everyone filled out a sexual satisfaction survey. The people who took caffeine got a huge boost in performance satisfaction and enjoyment compared to taking a placebo.

And for men, caffeine might keep you active between the sheets for much longer.

A study at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston shows that if you take in the equivalent amount of caffeine contained in two or three cups of coffee you can reduce your risk of erectile dysfunction (ED).

The researchers found that getting 85 to 170 milligrams of caffeine a day reduced a man’s chances of erectile dysfunction (ED) by 42 percent (there’s about 85 mg in a cup of coffee).

But there was one group of men who weren’t helped at all by coffee – those with diabetes.

“Even though we saw a reduction in the prevalence of ED with men who were obese, overweight and hypertensive, that was not true of men with diabetes. Diabetes is one of the strongest risk factors for ED, so this was not surprising,” says researcher David S. Lopez.

Caffeine probably helps sexual function and pleasure because of its positive effect on helping blood vessels work better and carry more blood.

As far as taking caffeine goes, try to stay away from products with synthetic caffeine. It’s cheaper, so it’s more widely used, but synthetic caffeine doesn’t act like natural caffeine in your body.

For example it might sound good that synthetic caffeine absorbs faster, but it also means you get a very fast release of neurotransmitters, and a very hard crash. You also might experience more negative side effects such as difficulty sleeping, nervousness, heart palpitations or nausea. However with natural plant-sourced caffeine, the source and the co-factors involved help regulate the absorption and give you a more normal and energizing reaction.

Most products that have the ingredient “caffeine” have the synthetic kind. Look for guarana or green tea to get the natural plant form.

Have you heard of guarana? It is a cousin to coffee, but the caffeine gets into your body by way of healthy fats, so it has a smooth, sustained release that lasts much longer that coffee’s.

But it also works to drink coffee and black tea, which give you a good amount of energy from the naturally occurring caffeine.
