The food choices we’re offered at the store by manufacturers make it very difficult to lose extra pounds, or keep excess fat off your body.

This can lead to inflammation, where excess fat, high blood pressure and diabetes begin to affect us.

But, research shows there’s a food you can eat for dinner that may help control your blood sugar and boost your weight-loss efforts.

A study at the University of Buffalo demonstrates that eating portobello mushrooms can reduce your blood sugar reaction when you eat carbohydrates.

The effect, according to this research, is especially pronounced in women.

“Our results indicate that consumption of mushrooms could be useful in regulating glucose levels,” says researcher Peter Horvath. “This alone may benefit individuals attempting to lose weight and who want to exercise for a longer time.”

In this research, the scientists generally found that the mushrooms slowed spikes and drop in blood glucose (sugar) and moderated the insulin response to sugar consumption.

The most popular way to eat a portobello mushroom might just be as a burger. Portobellos and beef or turkey burgers are about the same size. And when you add lettuce, tomato and avocado, and maybe even cilantro and some oregano or curcumin to a portobello, you have a powerhouse health food that has almost no equal in the sandwich world.

One portobello mushroom has around 45 calories, 1 gram of healthy fat, 5 grams of protein, tons of fiber, lots of b-vitamins, and a good dose of almost every mineral you need for health, including magnesium, potassium, copper and cancer-protective selenium.
