Watermelons have a very low glycemic load. That makes this water much easier on blood sugar than sugary drinks.

I have a confession to make: I like my water plain. I don’t even want ice in it most of the time. But my children really like flavored water, so I looked for and found a recipe for a Mexican drink that is essentially flavored water.

This recipe features watermelon, which is about 92 percent water; you’ll definitely quench your thirst and stay hydrated with this drink. What you may not realize, though, is that watermelons are nutrient-rich, too. In addition to lycopene, antioxidants and amino acids, watermelons contain significant levels of vitamins A, B6 and C.

Another great thing about watermelons is that, even though they are sweet, they have a very low glycemic load, which means you would need to eat a LOT to spike your blood sugar. That makes this water sweet, but much easier on blood sugar than sugary drinks.

Watermelon agua fresca

 

  • 6 pounds seedless watermelon, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 2 cups water, divided
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  1. In a blender, blend half of the watermelon and 1 cup of water until smooth. Pour through a strainer into a pitcher. Throw away any remaining solids.
  2. Repeat step 1.
  3. Add lime juice and honey to the mixture in the pitcher and stir until thoroughly mixed.
  4. Refrigerate for at least an hour.
  5. To serve, put ice in glasses and pour Watermelon Agua Fresca over the ice.
