Before I became a minimalist, I dreaded the Christmas season because it was so much work. All the shopping, wrapping, mailing, decorating, cooking and related activities stressed me out and wore me down. It was during that time that I started a tradition to take two things off my to-do list: decorating the tree and hosting a Christmas party.

You see, that’s when I began throwing tree-trimming parties. First, I’d take my children to the Christmas tree farm, pick one out, get it home, put it in its stand and put on the lights. Then, I’d wait until friends and family came over. While they decorated, I served simple, but delicious, appetizers. This is one of my favorites. I served it with water crackers.

Brie, the star of this dish, is naturally lower in fat than most cheeses and is naturally low in carbohydrates. And according to nutritionist and weight-loss coach Alan Argon, “The combination of protein and fat in regular, full-fat cheese is very satiating. As a result, eating full-fat cheese holds your appetite at bay for hours, and I’ve found that it cuts down my clients’ food intake at subsequent meals.”

Honey-baked brie with walnuts

  • 1 12-ounce wedge of brie
  • ¼ cup of honey
  • ¼ cup of walnuts
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Put brie in a small baking dish or a small iron skillet (that’s what I use). Drizzle honey over the brie wedge and then sprinkle with walnuts.
  3. Bake for 10 minutes.
  4. Serve with crackers, bread, apple slices, etc.
