The change of seasons brings the flu and pneumonia to many older people. The reason we get the flu and pneumonia is a weakened immune system. The American people have grown so accustomed to vaccinations and inoculations they think nothing of lining up for a flu shot.

For some mysterious reason, the government and its medical establishment want everybody to have a flu shot. They want you to have a flu shot so much that they will give it to you free! I’m already seeing signs at local pharmacies encouraging people to come in for their flu shot. Of course, the ones with weak immune systems immediately get the flu and some die.

A weak thyroid gland and a buildup of toxins in the body can lead to a weak metabolism. This creates the body condition for the flu. Low metabolic activity signifies low thyroid function or hypothyroidism. Toxemia or poison buildup comes as a result of low thyroid function. The result is chronic fatigue, the flu and everything else. The problem is inside our bodies not outside. We don’t “catch” the flu. We develop respiratory infections because we have become weak. This allows bacteria to thrive.

The flu season comes at the change in seasons, particularly if there is a radical change in the weather. Our thyroid has been turned down for the summer and is sluggish in adjusting the body for cold weather.

The most important vitamin to the thyroid is vitamin F. Vitamin F is composed of two fatty acids: linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linoleic acid (LNA). These are the essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6. The typical American diet makes everyone short on omega-3 and heavy on omega-6, which creates an imbalance leading to inflammation.

Vitamin F controls tissue calcium, and the thyroid controls how vitamin F is used. You also have to have vitamin D or sunshine to absorb calcium. Dark winter days and no vitamin D supplementation slow down calcium absorption. A lot of older people never see any sunshine at all.

I do not believe that people who have normal thyroid function can get the flu. General health is always better in those who have normal thyroid function. If you are sick a lot, you may wish to check your basal temperature (for instructions, go here). If your basal temperature proves to be low, you may want to get your thyroid function checked by your holistic health practitioner or doctor.

So we believe that an excellent preparation to aid in avoiding the flu is to check whether you have normal thyroid function and make sure you get plenty of vitamin F. You can rebalance your omegas by eating more fish, especially salmon. Flaxseed oil is an excellent source for vitamin F. You can get vitamin D and vitamin A from cod liver oil. And health food stores also sell supplements. Just be sure the vitamin D is natural vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and not synthetic vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol).

And no discussion of flu preventatives is complete without mentioning zinc. Dr. Joseph Mercola writes that mild zinc deficiency can lead to frequent colds, the flu, chronic fatigue and poor general health. Zinc is required for function of white blood cells, which fight off infectious agents.

If you are coming down with the flu, leave off all your vitamins except your calcium and flaxseed oil or vitamin F. Eat a single food diet such as potato soup or chicken broth. A daily glass of elderberry wine or juice before going to bed is an excellent herbal prevention for colds and flu. Try the health food store to get elderberry juice.

Remember, we are talking about toxicity being the cause of the flu. Exercise and deep breathing helps the lymphatic system get rid of the trash in your body. Keep moving if you want to be healthier. The less you move, the quicker you die.
