Stop Alzheimers

If you’re worried about the possibility you’ll lose your memory to Alzheimer’s disease, you should know about the natural ways to severely cut your risk. It works a lot better than waiting for Big Pharma to cook up expensive drugs of limited usefulness.

Not that conventional medicine doesn’t keep trying to explain why drugs to treat Alzheimer’s are always just a few years away. Consider the new, “ground breaking” discovery out of Australia – Researchers at the University of South Australia in collaboration with scientists at China’s Third Military Medical University have found a new “drug target” they say may someday help in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

The research analyzes the ways in which the brain normally protects its neurons. Neurons form the brain network that allows you to create memories, process new information and engage in intelligent thought. When Alzheimer’s disease strikes, the neurons are compromised, many die and others are cut off from their connections to the rest of the brain.

The researchers found that neurons have guardians that latch on to destructive molecules and ferry them away before they can cause harm. But during Alzheimer’s, destructive material increases while a protective substance called p75ECD is lost. By restoring p75ECD in the brains of lab animals the scientists protected brain cells and kept their connections from being destroyed.

But don’t hold your breath waiting for a drug that can activate p75ECD. Even if the research proves correct, and is validated by other studies, it will be years before any practical use can be made of this discovery. And then there’s no guarantee it will yield a safe therapy applicable to humans and not just be a curiosity that works in a lab model of Alzheimer’s disease.

Meanwhile, though, you can adjust your lifestyle to make your risk of Alzheimer’s a whole lot less likely.

Maybe the most effective current way to keep your brain healthier is to keep your homocysteine level down. Homocysteine is an amino acid created in the body, and when you have too much, it can mean heart problems and shrinkage of the brain as you age … and it is linked to Alzheimer’s incidence.

But there’s an easy natural solution that can lower homocysteine and help your brain. It’s B-vitamins, especially vitamin B12. The best foods for B12 include fish (wild caught), poultry, meat, and eggs.

To lower homocysteine, however, you’ll need to supplement with a high-dose B-complex vitamin. They’re very inexpensive and effective – since the combination of B-vitamins is what does the trick. The need to supplement is especially prevalent if you’re a woman, who tend to be deficient in B-vitamins in today’s world, or if you’re a vegetarian, since vitamin B12 is only available in any good quantity through meat, and is absent in fruits and vegetables.
