Chemical formula of coenzyme Q10

A researcher at McGill University in Canada seems to be on a mission to denigrate CoQ10 and its usefulness as a dietary supplement.

You see, he’s “found” that it doesn’t seem to act as strongly as an antioxidant as was first thought.

But he’s missing the point about CoQ10’s importance.

According to researcher Siegfried Hekimi, his lab tests demonstrate that CoQ10 (also known as Coenzyme Q10 or unbiquinone) doesn’t play a role in the body as antioxidant, and doesn’t defend the body’s organs and cells from damage by caustic free radicals.

Therefore, he maintains, taking CoQ10 is a waste of time and money.

“Our findings show that one of the major anti-aging antioxidant supplements used by people can’t possibly act as previously believed,” says Hekimi. “Dietary supplements cost a lot of money to patients throughout the world — money that would be better spent on healthy food. What’s more, the hope for a quick fix makes people less motivated to undertake appropriate lifestyle changes.”

What Hekimi doesn’t seem to recognize, though, is that even if CoQ10 doesn’t act as an antioxidant in his research, a long list of studies shows that the nutrient can produce significant benefits for people suffering health problems.

For example, a test of CoQ10 on people with heart failure shows that it helps people live longer and improves their heart function. CoQ10 increases the pumping power of your heart, reversing congestive heart failure.

Researcher Svend Aage Mortensen notes: “Supplementation with CoQ10, which is a natural and safe substance, corrects a deficiency in the body and blocks the vicious metabolic cycle in chronic heart failure called the energy-starved heart.”

Another test of CoQ10, this one performed at MIT, looked at veterans of the Gulf War who are victims of Gulf War illness and who are debilitatingly fatigued. The MIT researchers showed that CoQ10 increased their energy levels, and relieved their headaches, memory problems, muscle pain and irritability.

The one thing you should know is that ubiquinone, while a more abundant form in the body, isn’t the most “bioavailable” form of CoQ10. The more powerful form is called ubiquinol. Of course, Hekimi never tested ubiquinol’s power. But you only need 50 mg to equal 400 mg of ubiquinone. In fact, it was 100 mg of ubiquinol that benefitted our gulf war veterans so much in the study I mentioned above.
